Magnificent Obsession (1954)

In the throes of reckless extravagance, Bob Merrick, a wealthy and self-centered playboy, triggers a devastating chain of events when he crashes his speed boat. The local rescue team, in their bid to save Merrick, unwittingly deprives the town's beloved doctor, Wayne Phillips, of the crucial equipment that could have saved his life. As the doctor's selfless legacy unravels, Merrick stumbles upon his secret: to give generously, yet anonymously. Driven by guilt and a newfound perspective, Merrick clumsily attempts to emulate this noble principle, a decision that only widens the chasm between him and Helen, the grieving widow of Dr. Phillips, who has unexpectedly stolen Merrick's heart. As Merrick's clumsy philanthropy precipitates another catastrophe, he is forced to not only reevaluate his life but also embark on an unlikely journey to redeem himself. His path takes him to the halls of medical school, in an earnest attempt to amend the past and earn the love he yearns for from Helen.
