In the heart of the Bay Area, Sarah Mathews, a proud widow and proprietor of the African Queen store, and her intelligent high school senior daughter, Zora Mathews, lead a life steeped in their African heritage. Their passionate disputes never overshadow the deep love they share. Sarah, driven by this love, nudges Zora towards Berkeley instead of M.I.T, hoping to keep her closer to home. However, a tangled web of lies unravels when Sarah confesses that Zora's father, the late Charlie, was not her biological parent. Instead, Zora was conceived through artificial insemination from an anonymous sperm donor. With a burning desire to know her biological father, Zora, aided by her best friend Tea Cake Walton, hacks into the sperm bank's database, unearthing the identity of her donor: Hal Jackson. Shockwaves ripple through Zora's life as she discovers Hal's true identity. He's not just any Hal Jackson, but the local, tacky car-salesman renowned for his crude advertising methods. More shockingly, Hal is unabashedly, unapologetically white. Sarah and Hal reel from this revelation, Sarah riled by the mistake made in selecting a donor against her preference, and Hal stunned by the unexpected discovery. With the truth now bared, the trio grapples with the implications. Hal is forced to reflect on his life, tinted by failed marriages and his current vapid, stereotypical blonde girlfriend, Stacy. As the dust settles, Sarah and Zora must grapple with the reality of Hal's existence, which could potentially cast him, and their understanding of themselves, in a transformational new light.
