Plot

In a provincial city, a young girl named Ai (Sairi Ito), born into the frenzied devotion of her religiously fanatic mother, is dispatched to spend seven tumultuous years in a cult commune. When the commune's dubious practices are revealed by law enforcement, Ai is thrust into the humdrum normalcy of a typical middle school. However, she finds herself a misfit in the jigsaw puzzle of society. Choosing to leave school behind, Ai embarks on a journey of self-discovery, first finding solace in the company of a family teetering on the brink of delinquency, and then seeking comfort amidst the trappings of a middle-class household. Yet, her place in the world remains elusive. Her only confidant is Ryota (Kenta Suga), a societal outcast himself who, much like Ai, has been jettisoned from the norm. Ryota's path meanders through the murky underbelly of delinquency while Ai finds herself entangled in the sex industry. Their youthful innocence is devoured by the relentless urban wilderness of the large provincial city. Love and Other Cults (2017) is a biting black comedy that paints a poignant portrait of contemporary youth and their relentless struggles in a world seemingly devoid of escape routes.
