Plot

In the bucolic expanse of New South Wales, Rhia (Emily Barclay), a hardworking single mother of three, battles to keep her head above the relentless tide of debts and the challenge of raising her three young daughters. Her eldest, Lou (Lily Bell Tindley), a child prematurely aged by the harshness of life, bitterly accuses Rhia for their father's disappearance - a ghost who vanished into the ether a mere ten months prior. The strained bond between mother and daughter frays further when Rhia opens her home to Doyle (Sir John Hurt), her Alzheimer's-afflicted father-in-law. At first, Lou meets Doyle with a wall of hostility, but he gradually chips away at her resistance with captivating stories of his thrilling escapades in the South Seas. However, hidden beneath the surface of his mind, fragmented memories of his late wife, Annie, stir and tumble. As the days pass, Doyle begins to see echoes of Annie in Lou, leading him down a path of nostalgic courting, stirring up a whirlwind of emotions within the fragile family dynamic.
