Plot

In the gripping narrative of Lost Girls, we follow the relentless Mari Gilbert, a role powerfully embodied by Academy Award® nominee Amy Ryan, as she is thrown into a harrowing search for her missing daughter. When law enforcement proves ineffectual, Mari takes matters into her own hands, launching an investigation that leads her into the heart of a gated Long Island community - the last place her daughter, Shannan, was seen. In her desperate quest, Mari inadvertently shines a piercing light on a chilling series of forgotten tragedies - over a dozen murdered sex workers whose stories have been lost to the shadows. Undeterred by the grim reality unfolding before her, Mari finds herself as much a crusader for these forgotten victims as for her own daughter, refusing to let their stories be swallowed by the world's indifference. Lost Girls is a haunting exploration of determination and truth, crafted with poignant brilliance by Academy Award® nominated filmmaker Liz Garbus. Inspired by the harrowing true events documented in Robert Kolker's "Lost Girls: An Unsolved American Mystery," this gripping tale made its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. This film is a chilling reminder of the silent tragedies that often lurk behind closed doors, and the extraordinary lengths a mother will go to find her child.
