Plot

In the tumultuous mid-1950s, as the echoes of independence reverberate through Algeria, the French government is forced to shift its focus from the recently lost territory of Indochina. At the heart of this historical crossroad is Lt. Col. Pierre Raspeguy, a battle-hardened leader who commanded a paratrooper unit in the grim finale of the French's struggle in Indochina. Deemed controversial by his superiors, Raspeguy finds his command stripped away, only to be offered a new assignment based on the unwavering respect his men hold for him, as recorded by the insightful Capt. Philippe Esclavier, his unit's official historian. Despite the challenges ahead, including leading a band of "reject" soldiers in the 10th Regiment, Raspeguy accepts the assignment. His conditions? His trusted officers, including Esclavier and the Indochina-born Capt. Boisfeuras, must join him. However, Lt. Mahidi, an Algerian Arab disgusted by the French's atrocities in his homeland and now leading a guerrilla unit in the Atlas Mountains, will not be among them. Raspeguy's ambitions reach beyond upholding French ideals; he yearns for a promotion to General, a position that would enable him to marry the widowed Countess Nathalie de Clairefons. However, maintaining peace within his own regiment, especially with the bloodthirsty Boisfeuras and the cerebral Esclavier, proves a formidable task. The situation becomes further entangled when the regiment is assigned to Algiers, tasked with quelling a bombing campaign by insurgents. Ordered to disregard the legal rights of the citizens in order to fulfill their duty, Raspeguy's men find themselves on a perilous path. Complications escalate as Esclavier starts a clandestine relationship with a young Arab woman, Aicha, unaware of her ties to Mahidi and her secret allegiance to the insurgents. As Raspeguy fights to salvage his career amidst the chaos of Algeria's struggle for independence, he must navigate a complex battlefield where friends and enemies are not as easily distinguished, and where personal ambition, duty, and the harsh realities of war intertwine. His last chance to prove his worth is in this turbulent terrain, where the line between victory and defeat is as shifting as the desert sands.
