Two decades after escaping the oppressive grasp of his father, Reverend Leo Hausman, Chuck Hausman finds himself drawn back to his hometown of Deerfield, accompanied by his wife Rebecca. The return is riddled with secrets as Rebecca discovers Chuck's clever ruse of faking a psychosis to gain freedom. The late Leo's will stirs further turmoil, declaring Chuck as the primary beneficiary while revealing a lost investment fund, entrusted to Leo by three trusting locals. Suspicion and greed take hold of Deerfield as Pete Gromek and his partners suspect the missing funds to be cleverly hidden for Chuck, avoiding a police investigation that could potentially summon the IRS. Amidst the financial chaos, Chuck is also given Leo's cryptic diary, believed to hold the answers to the mystery. Unfortunately, the diary is swiftly stolen by Mrs. Ford, Leo's loyal housekeeper who believes she's entitled to the lost fortune for her years of devoted service. Tragedy strikes when Mrs. Ford is found dead, her head gruesomely bashed on a stone, with Chuck as a possible suspect. Adding to the town's descent into chaos, Chuck's teenage first love, Jeanine Blaylock, goes missing, only to be found stabbed to death after a clandestine plea to Chuck for money to escape Deerfield, much like he did years ago. As Chuck finds himself entangled in a web of deceit, murder, and buried secrets, he must navigate the treacherous waters of his past, where the death of Mary Hausman still casts a haunting shadow.
