Plot

In the bustling world of entertainment, young performer Carole Beaumont finds herself the object of affection for the charming actor and producer, Charles King. Yet, her heart wavers, unsure of her emotions towards him. Amidst the chaos of an air raid, a bomb detonates near the café, rendering Carole unconscious. In her disoriented state, vivid fantasies bloom, morphing her reality into a historical drama where she becomes Nell Gwyn of Old Drury, and Charles resembles King Charles himself. Upon regaining consciousness, her doctor recommends a serene retreat in the country. There, another suitor, Albert Gutman, encourages his grandmother, Lady Drayton, to extend an invitation to Carole to visit their family estate in Windsor. As she gazes upon Windsor Castle, her imagination once again takes flight, transforming her into a young Queen Victoria, with Albert as her Prince Albert. This daydream sways her decision, propelling her to accept Albert's proposal. Charles, however, has not given up on her. He comes bearing news of a departure to Burma, imploring her to join him and his company. But his plea falls on deaf ears; Carole is adamant she will never marry an actor. A barmaid, Kate, unravels Carole's reasons, revealing a tale of Carole's mother, Lillian Grey. Lillian, a former chorus girl turned star, married John Beaumont, a handsome leading actor. Their love story was interrupted by war, leaving Lillian to carve a successful solo career and raise Carole alone. This history has left Carole with a deep-seated wariness towards actors, shaping her decisions in love and life.
