Plot

In the tranquil county of Dorset, England, nestled within the grandeur of Ingworth House, reside Sir Mark (Sir Dirk Bogarde), Lady Margaret Loddon (Olivia de Havilland) and their young son Michael (Sebastian Saville). Their romance, which blossomed before World War II, was briefly paused as Mark was called to serve his country, returning as a man haunted by the terrors of war and the mysteries of a spotty memory from his time in a P.O.W. camp. As Mark grapples with a tune that perpetually echoes in his mind, a source of unsettling anxiety, he becomes entangled in a web of accusation spun by Jeffrey Buckenham (Paul Massie), a Canadian commercial airline pilot. Having been a fellow prisoner in the same German camp, Jeffrey, during a two-day layover in London, sees Mark on a television interview and is struck by an unshakeable conviction that the man living as Sir Mark is a fraud. He believes him to be Frank Welney (Sir Dirk Bogarde), a look-alike actor, and not the baronet he claims to be. Jeffrey confronts Mark, threatening to expose his perceived deceit, leading the story to seep into the public consciousness through the eager British media. On the insistence of his wife, Mark decides to sue Jeffrey for libel, an action Jeffrey had been hoping for in his pursuit to reveal the truth. Unbeknownst to Mark, his own cousin, Captain Gerald Loddon (Anthony Dawson), a Jaguar car dealer who would have inherited the estate had Mark not returned from the war, is secretly fueling Jeffrey's allegations. As the libel case unfolds, the courtroom is gripped by the riveting testimonies of Mark, Jeffrey, and the elusive Frank, shaking the very foundation of Mark's identity. The war-born enigma surrounding Mark's past, his occasional stutters, and his difficulty remembering parts of his life, all feed into the growing speculation of his true identity as the case takes a dark turn. Is he Sir Mark or a clever impostor who may have murdered the real baronet? Even Lady Margaret, swayed by the mounting evidence, questions her husband's authenticity, accusing him of stealing not just an identity, but her love as well. The gripping climax of Libel (1959) unravels the tangled threads of truth, identity, and deception, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats, questioning the true identity of the haunted, war-torn protagonist.
