In the story of Les Disparus de Valenciennes, two estranged brothers, Mickael and Yann, find themselves reluctantly reunited after 18 tumultuous years. Their family was shattered by a catastrophic incident that claimed their father's life, along with 15 mine workers, in an ominous mine that has remained closed since. The incident, a methane explosion, carries contrasting interpretations for the brothers; while Mickael perceives it as a tragic accident, Yann harbours suspicion of a dark conspiracy involving a prominent industrial family, proprietors of a local methane company.
Now, the brothers, Mickael, the local cop in uniform, and Yann, the military policeman, are thrust into a reluctant collaboration as they are tasked with unravelling a chilling murder, eerily echoing the past. The gruesome scene unveils a man brutally assaulted before being hanged at the very site of the fateful explosion that forever altered their lives.
As they delve deeper into the mystery, they begin to discern a potential link between the present murder and the tragic incident of their past. Their pursuit of justice morphs into a poignant excavation of the region's shadowy history, unearthing long-forgotten grudges, simmering emotions, and secrets that some would much prefer stay buried.
