In the gloom of 1931 Berlin, amid the shadow of the Great Depression, the struggle for survival sets a somber tone for the working-class Bönke family. When despair drives Anni's brother to suicide, the family is thrown into a vortex of financial crisis, leading to their eviction for non-payment of rent. In a bid to find refuge, they migrate to Kuhle Wampe, a summer retreat transformed into a makeshift sanctuary for the city's swelling population of unemployed. Anni's relationship with Fritz, her steadfast boyfriend, provides the only glimmer of stability in her life. His steadfast support shines through as he aids the Bönkes during their relocation. However, the foundations of their relationship are tested when Anni falls pregnant. After initially promising to marry her, Fritz's resolve crumbles, culminating in a jarring end to their engagement following the engagement party. In the aftermath, Anni finds herself drawn back to the heart of Berlin. There, she becomes entwined with the workers' youth movement, seeking solace and purpose amid the rallying cries for justice and change.
