Plot

In the twilight of his reign, King Lear (Sir Michael Hordern) seeks solace in the affection of his daughters, deciding to divide his kingdom based on their professions of love for him. However, when his youngest and most truthful daughter, Cordelia (Brenda Blethyn), refuses to partake in hollow flattery, she is exiled, leaving the King at the mercy of his remaining daughters. Goneril (Gillian Barge) and Regan (Dame Penelope Wilton), devoid of genuine love for their father, conspire to usurp his dwindling power. Parallel to this runs the tale of the loyal Earl of Gloucester (Norman Rodway), who, ensnared by deception, bestows favor upon his illegitimate son Edmund (Michael Kitchen), discrediting his faithful son Edgar (Anton Lesser). As the story unfolds, both fathers, betrayed by their own flesh and blood, plunge into a maelstrom of madness and tragedy, blurring the lines between love, power, and deceit. In King Lear, loyalty is tested, trust is broken, and the consequences of ill-placed faith reveal themselves in the most heart-wrenching manner.
