Plot

A modern-day adaptation of the classic Indian fable of the hare and the tortoise, 'Katha' is a heartwarming exploration of love, deceit, and the virtues of patience. Set against the bustling backdrop of Bombay, the film introduces us to Rajaram P. Joshi (Naseeruddin Shah), our virtuous tortoise, a middle-class clerk residing in a chawl. Rajaram's heart beats quietly for his neighbour, Sandhya Sabnis (Deepti Naval), but his shy nature keeps his feelings hidden. Rajaram's world is disrupted with the arrival of his charming yet manipulative friend, Vasudev, also known as Bashu (Farooq Shaikh). Representing the hare, Bashu is a master of tall tales and overblown bravado, who swiftly sweeps Sandhya off her feet with his charm. Bashu also slyly secures a position at Rajaram's workplace, Footprint Shoes, with fictional tales of his accomplishments and a feigned enthusiasm for golf, even as he flirts with the owner's wife and daughter. As Bashu's web of deceit unravels, he vanishes on the day of his engagement to Sandhya, leaving a heartbroken woman in his wake. This is when Rajaram steps forward, revealing his long-concealed love for Sandhya and offering her marriage, despite the possibility of her carrying Bashu's child. 'Katha' is a compelling story that challenges the notion of the race to the finish line, throwing into question whether the victory of the good is worth the wait, and the cost that comes with it.
