Plot

In the heartwarming yet complex narrative of Juanita (2018), we follow the journey of Juanita, a spirited 35-year-old Dominican woman living abroad amongst 350,000 of her fellow countrymen. As Christmas dawns, she finds herself yearning for the familiar warmth of her homeland. Accompanying her is Mariano, a weathered Spanish man significantly her senior, who is drawn to the island's evergreen promise of constant sowing. Mariano, in an uncharacteristic leap of faith, sells his share of land in Burgo de Osma, using the proceeds to rescue Juanita's Santo Domingo home from the clutches of foreclosure. Their arrival in the island, however, unravels a complex web of secrets. Juanita reveals the existence of her two children, and in a startling confession, Mariano admits to using her illegal status to ensure her stay with him. The couple soon finds themselves swept up in a whirlwind of familial ties and old acquaintances. The unexpected presence of Jairo, Juanita's children’s father and a quintessential Dominican street-savvy man, further stirs the pot, his eyes reflecting a simmering jealousy towards Mariano. What Mariano doesn't know yet is Juanita's silent pact with Jairo to live under the same roof for the sake of their children. Once bound by their shared solitude in Spain, Juanita and Mariano now face the challenge of staying afloat amidst the undercurrents of their new life in Santo Domingo. As they navigate through this tumultuous sea of familial chaos and complex relationships, they are forced to confront the realization that love, particularly when transplanted across the Atlantic, can prove to be an intricate dance.
