Plot

In the quaint English village of 18th century Britain, the vivacious Lady "Belle" Booby (Ann-Margret), wife of the rotund squire Sir Thomas Booby (Peter Bull), sets her lascivious sights on the handsome and sharp-witted Joseph Andrews (Peter Firth). Joseph, a Latin student under the tutelage of Parson Adams (Sir Michael Hordern), is elevated to the role of footman in their household. Yet, his heart is tethered to the rustic charm of a country maiden, the orphan Fanny Goodwill (Natalie Ogle). The Bohemian trip to Bath, a fashionable destination teeming with the cream of society, is more than just an opportunity for Sir Thomas to seek treatment for his ailing foot. Amidst the opulence and grandeur, he tragically succumbs to his affliction in the renowned Roman baths. Lady Booby, in her escalating desire for Joseph, finds her advances rebuffed by his virtuous and steadfast affection for Fanny. Enraged by his rejection, she dismisses the young footman. Stripped of his position, Joseph embarks on a barefoot journey back home, only to be waylaid by ruthless highwaymen who rob him of all his possessions. An innkeeper's maid comes to his rescue, stirring up her own desires, yet Joseph remains honourable. The noble Parson Adams discovers him in his predicament, offering aid. Simultaneously, Lady Booby agrees to an unexpected match for her cousin, when she learns his bride-to-be is Joseph's sister, Pamela (Karen Dotrice). Amidst these intertwined destinies, Parson Adams narrowly escapes a vicious gentleman's false accusation of a crime he prevented. As he uncovers a scandalous tale of child-theft by Gypsies, the good Parson, Joseph, and Fanny find themselves in the clutches of a debauched squire's wicked appetites. Their lives entwined in a tapestry of love, lust, and deception, they must navigate the treacherous waters of 18th-century society.
