In the heartland of rural India, nestled within an uneducated community that's shackled by rustic superstitions, the innocent and bubbly Suli teeters on the brink of womanhood. Her dreams and aspirations are brutally swept away as she is thrust into a life of servitude to the local deity, transforming her from a carefree girl into a 'Jogtini' - a woman of subjugation and serfdom. This harsh societal dictum, decided upon by the ominous Akkabai, stems from a misinterpreted omen in Suli's hair and the deeply rooted traditions of the Jogta and Jogtini culture, where individuals devote themselves to God, forsake marriage, and are reduced to collecting alms.
Parallel to Suli's plight, Tayappa, a man suffering from a mysterious ailment, is similarly forced by his family to abandon his identity. He is made to drape a sari, wear bangles, and live a life of a 'Jogta', a male equivalent of a Jogtini. Stripped of their individualities, Suli and Tayappa grapple with their new, undesirable existence, their lives dictated by the archaic traditions and the cruel societal beliefs.
As time wears on, their shared circumstances and wretched futures ignite a warm camaraderie between them. This companionship, nurtured in the face of adversity, eventually blossoms into love. Together, they dare to dream again, seeking solace and comfort in each other's company, yearning for a normal life. However, their union is met with the wrath of their oppressive society, hell-bent on destroying their burgeoning relationship.
