Jeremiah (1998)

In the humble village of Anathoth, not far from the bustling city of Jerusalem, young Jeremiah grows up within the devout walls of a priest's family. Fate has a unique path for him, as God makes His divine appearance in various human forms, imbuing Jeremiah with a daunting mission—to deliver God's message to the people of Jerusalem. This message is a warning of dire consequences—a mighty northern ruler's impending assault on the Kingdom of Judah—should they continue to bow to false idols and neglect the One True God. However, Jeremiah's prophetic voice falls on deaf ears in his own village. His own kin turns a blind eye, and he faces accusations of blasphemy and physical assaults. Yet, his resolve remains unshakeable, fortified by the support of Baruch, a temple scribe and Jeremiah's disciple, who becomes instrumental in broadcasting God's word. Jeremiah’s forewarnings of an impending disaster are met with scorn and dismissal from the ruling classes, the priesthood, and even the King. His message only stirs anger, leading him into captivity. But even as he is forced to surrender his love for Judith to destiny, Jeremiah clings onto his divine mission with unwavering devotion. As the threat of war with the formidable Babylonians looms heavily over Jerusalem, the city's inhabitants start to stir, and Jeremiah begins to gain a reluctant following. Yet, the King, misled by the false prophet Hananiah, places his trust in the might of their Egyptian allies. This misplaced trust is shattered when the Babylonians lay siege to the Holy City. Even as the flames of destruction consume Jerusalem and the people are led away to Babylonian exile, the King finds himself ensnared in a web of indecision. Starring Patrick Dempsey and Oliver Reed, "Jeremiah" is a compelling tale of a prophet who forsakes everything—his family, his love, and his safety—to deliver God's message, only to find himself battling against a storm of disbelief, scorn and the inevitable destruction of his beloved city.
