Plot

Once a dutiful criminal lawyer at the renowned firm Greer-Irish, Jack Irish finds his life capsized when a past client commits an unthinkable act: the murder of his wife, Isabel. This tragedy propels Irish into a vortex of disillusionment, prompting him to distance himself from the grimy underworld of the accused criminals he once defended. Seeking solace and a new path, Irish immerses himself in a diverse world of unconventional vocations. By day, he revels in the rich history of his favourite artefacts at the Prince of Prussia, losing himself in the echoes of the past. As twilight descends, he often finds himself engrossed in the age-old craft of woodworking, under the tutelage of an elderly neighbour. He and a couple of loyal pals venture into the unpredictable realm of horse racing, acquiring a racehorse and diving headfirst into the world of betting. Simultaneously, Irish adopts a more hands-on role in debt collection, becoming a part-time investigator and skip tracer, skillfully tracking down those who would rather remain hidden. However, his newfound equilibrium is disrupted when an old client, seeking his help, unexpectedly dies. This untimely death forces Irish to grapple with the shadows of his former life — a past he'd hoped to permanently abandon. Aiding him in untangling this web of mysteries is an enigmatic blonde journalist, whose cool composure proves invaluable in their quest for truth. As the layers of the puzzle unravel, Jack Irish finds himself embroiled in a world of intrigue and danger, a world he thought he had left far behind.
