Plot

In the heart of Manhattan, a game of hide and seek unfolds in the grand Fifth Avenue mansion of Michael J. O'Connor, the world's second richest man. For two decades, the canny vagabond, Aloysius T. McKeever - affectionately known as Mac - has made an art of temporarily occupying luxurious homes while their wealthy owners are away, savoring a taste of their lifestyle without leaving a trace of his presence. This winter, his chosen abode is O'Connor's opulent mansion. But Mac's solitary occupation is disrupted when he invites Jim Bullock, a war veteran evicted from his last dwelling by none other than O'Connor himself. Jim, a man with a noble vision to provide housing for veterans, brings in two fellow comrades and their families, struggling to find a home that would accommodate their children. As the mansion's population grows, an unexpected guest arrives - Trudy Smith, an eighteen-year-old runaway. Smitten by Jim's spirit and Mac's unusual lifestyle, Trudy conceals the truth from her newfound friends: she is actually Trudy O'Connor, the disillusioned daughter of Michael J. O'Connor, who fled the confines of her finishing school and her father's relentless pursuit of wealth. As Trudy dreams of a life with Jim, she ushers two more vagabonds into the mansion. The first is Mike - her father, Michael J. O'Connor, who has returned to New York earlier than usual. Oblivious to his identity, the mansion's residents welcome him with open arms. The second is Mary, the mansion's new cook, who is in fact Trudy's mother and O'Connor's ex-wife, called upon to meet Jim and to balance Mike's influence in the house. As the mansion teems with life, sparks fly and tensions build. O'Connor, unaware of his role in this makeshift family, eyes the same government property as Jim for his most ambitious business venture yet. Unpredictable alliances, blossoming romance, and the struggle for a cause greater than wealth all come to a head in the luxurious confines of the Fifth Avenue mansion. Will O'Connor's anger ignite a firestorm, or will this unique ensemble of vagabonds transform his mansion into a home for the heart?
