Plot

In the hustle and bustle of New York City, two unlikely dreamers, the innocent Lyle Rogers and the suave ladies' man Chuck Clarke, stumble upon their shared passion for songwriting. Despite their earnest efforts, their talent leaves much to be desired, a fact they blissfully overlook. Their quest for fame comes at a high price, costing each of them their marriages, and their clumsy performances only exacerbate their woes. Yet, they are undeterred, choosing to accept a less-than-glamorous gig at a Moroccan hotel, a dubious offer from their beleaguered agent, Marty Freed. The pair's journey to Morocco takes a detour through the suspense-filled landscape of Ishtar, where their lives are unexpectedly entwined with the destiny of a young woman, Shirra Assel. Shirra, fearing for her life, entrusts the duo with a map that holds the potential to ignite an uprising against Ishtar's ruling government, led by the iron-fisted Emir Yousef. Unbeknownst to Lyle and Chuck, this map is the cause of her brother's death and the beacon of hope for the rebels seeking to upturn the government. As these lounge singers unwittingly become entangled in an intricate international power play, they are pursued by CIA agent Jim Harrison, who is determined to prevent the overthrow of the Emir. Amid the escalating tension, a comedy of errors ensues as Lyle and Chuck misconstrue each other's roles, each convinced that the other is a political operative. Trapped in a web of conspiracy and danger, they must navigate their way through the volatile world of Ishtar, where all parties are ready to sacrifice them for their cause. In this riveting tale of adventure, two hapless musicians must chart their course through a high-stakes game of power, where their lives hang in the balance.
