Plot

Thrust into the raw heart of post-Apartheid South Africa, Washington Post journalist Langston Whitfield confronts a world riddled with deep-seated scars. Tasked with the provocative assignment of documenting the Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings, he descends into a realm where murderers and torturers boldly face the victims of their chilling past. The hearings offer a chance at amnesty, a glimmer of hope for reconciliation in a country grappling with the shadow of Apartheid, but Langston remains dubious. His path crosses with Colonel De Jager, a figure notorious for his monstrous acts during Apartheid. As he delves deep into the psyche of this beast, Langston is forced to face his own lurking demons. Parallel to Langston's journey, Afrikaans poet Anna Malan traverses her own path of revelation. Covering the hearings for radio, she grapples with the stark reality of the atrocities committed by her kin, which shatter her perception of her own identity. Both Anna and Langston, bound by the piercing testimonies of the victims, find themselves questioning their roles in the grand scheme of their nations' histories. Distanced from their families and united by a shared experience, they find solace in each other amidst the chaos. 'In My Country' is an exploration of the darkest corners of human cruelty, offset by the transformative power of forgiveness and love. The narrative charts a path of redemption, asking the question: Can a nation heal from its past by confronting it?
