For four decades, the quaint seaside town's pier theatre has been under the dedicated stewardship of Norman (Roger Lloyd Pack), a man who splits his time as a stalwart of the local lifeboat crew. His life has been intertwined with the theatre since his youth, a time when the theatre's stage reverberated with the enchanting melodies of celebrated singers like the vibrant Alma Cogan, a memory that Norman cherishes dearly. Now, the town council, the true proprietors of the pier, are threatening to replace him with fresh, trendier management, a move that Norman is determined to resist. By his side is his faithful assistant, Sandra (Niamh Cusack), an aspiring singer, who convinces Norman that perhaps it is time to relinquish his role. With a heavy heart, Norman steps down, now assuming the role of a supportive spectator, ushering Sandra into the limelight as she embarks on her singing career.
