Immigrant (2013)

"Immigrant" paints the poignant journey of Daanyik, a spirited nine-year-old Russian lad, whose world is uprooted as his family chases the elusive American Dream in the late seventies. Once immersed in a childhood of innocuous pencil sketches and toy soldier skirmishes on the streets of Moscow, Daanyik is abruptly thrust into the stark reality of premature adulthood in the stark landscapes of New York City. The untimely demise of his father, Deema, leaves Daanyik and his mother, Meela, adrift in the vast sea of unfamiliarity and poverty. Fuelled by the desperate need for survival, Meela finds herself entangled in a toxic relationship with Tolik, a man whose shadowy past may be intertwined with Deema's death. In this alien world, Daanyik is caught in a tangled web of adversity - a cruel stepfather, a lascivious Rabbi, and a merciless neighborhood bully. Amidst this tempest, he finds solace in his art, his pencils becoming his sword and shield, offering a cathartic release from his torment. Despite his tender age, Daanyik is faced with battles that threaten to shatter his world and that of his mother. "Immigrant" is a testament to his resilience as he grapples with towering odds, striving to salvage what remains of their shattered dreams from the brink of destruction.
