In the bustling year of 1966, Helen Reddy, an inspiring songstress with a three-year-old daughter in tow, lands in the heart of New York. Her pockets hold a mere $230, and her heart cradles the shattered dreams of a promised recording contract. The record company, brimming with female talents, dismisses her, suggesting a joyride in the city before she retreats to her homeland, Australia. But Helen, visa-less yet undeterred, sets her roots in the city, determined to carve a singing career from the concrete jungle. Struggling to stitch together a life while keeping her dreams alive, Helen crosses paths with the charismatic Lillian Roxon, a legendary rock journalist. Lillian, donning the role of Helen's confidante, kindles a spark within her that births the song "I Am Woman". This anthem, echoing the voices of the second wave feminist movement, empowers a generation of women to rally for change. As Helen navigates the labyrinth of her budding career, she encounters Jeff Wald, an ambitious talent manager. He becomes not just her agent, but the man she calls her husband. Jeff's guidance catapults her to the heights of fame, yet his drug addiction casts a shadow over their relationship, tainting it with toxicity. Trapped in the dizzying whirl of fame and reliant on Jeff for her professional management, Helen summons her strength.
