Plot

In the gripping tale of I Am Slave (2010), we delve into the harrowing reality of Mende Nazer's life. Our story begins in the serene Nubar Mountains of Sudan, focusing on the vibrant twelve-year-old Malia, daughter of the renowned wrestler Bah. Her peaceful existence is shattered when a ruthless pro-government Arab militia invades her village, abducting her and thrusting her into a life of enslavement. She finds herself in Khartoum, sold to a woman whose cruelty knows no bounds, punishing Malia for mere interactions with her daughter. After enduring six agonizing years in this harsh environment, she is relocated to London. Despite the change in scenery, her torment continues, her identity stripped away as her name is changed and her passport confiscated. Threats of her father's death keep her bound in silence, preventing her from seeking help from authorities. Yet, amidst her despair, a glimmer of hope appears in the form of a compassionate stranger. This encounter ignites a flicker of optimism, the promise of escape and a reunion with her beloved father back in Sudan. However, the film's hopeful tone is tinged with a sobering reality, revealed in the closing title that estimates around 5,000 individuals are still living as 'slaves' in Britain. This chilling fact serves as a reminder that Malia's story is, tragically, not an isolated case. Through this stark cinematic portrayal, I Am Slave (2010) pulls back the curtain on the unseen world of modern-day slavery, compelling us to confront this harsh reality.
