Plot

In the icy realms of the Russian province, a young playwright, a creator of avant-garde theater, weaves his tale of self-imposed exile within the chaotic confines of a psychiatric ward, a drastic refuge sought to evade the call of military duty. This story - "I Am" or "Ya" as it is known in Russian - oscillates between the mundane and the extraordinary as it delves into everyday madhouse scenes juxtaposed with echoes of childhood memories, all wrapped in the cloak of parables transformed into stunningly decadent visuals. The narrative orbits around a peculiar clique led by Rom, a figure who emerges as a twisted savior, an icon of drug-induced decadence. Through "Ya's" eyes, we witness their lives unfurl, mirroring the apostles' narration of Jesus. Yet, the film refrains from posing the question of who the true madmen are - the doctors or the patients? In this Baroque tableau of reality and hallucination, the line between the two blurs. Igor Voloshin, the mastermind behind this cinematic spectacle, defies traditional genre norms, braiding his own mythologies and symbols into the narrative fabric. His tale is a mélange of trash, decadence, and rock'n'roll, brought to life through vivid imagery, pulsing music, and a highly-stylized aesthetic. Voloshin, with his audacious humor and provocative storytelling, crafts a tale as rich as it is ruthless. His film, "I Am," is a raw exploration of human nature and madness, an anti-biblical opera that is as captivating as it is unsettling, leaving no viewer untouched.
