When life seems to be an endless comedy of errors for Richard Martinez, a gay stand-up comedian and substitute chemistry teacher struggling to find satisfaction in bustling New York City, an unexpected opportunity presents itself. Landing a full-time position as a science teacher at Milford High School in the conservative hinterland of Milford, Texas, Richard is unaware that he's accepting the job everyone else vehemently avoids. In the midst of this backwater town, he finds himself at the epicenter of a cultural clash, with the students hell-bent on making his life a living nightmare. But, his real struggle begins when he is unjustly fired solely for being gay, a stark reality in the Texas landscape. This act of bigotry is orchestrated by the ultra-conservative faction at the school, spearheaded by the rigid Deborah Ward, Richard's supervisor in the Teaching Ambassador Program that facilitated his appointment. In the wake of his unceremonious dismissal, Richard forms an unlikely friendship with Karma Johnstone, a radio self-help talk show host and the only soul in Milford who extends a hand of friendship. An evening spent in her company sparks an audacious plan in Richard's mind - to return to the school in disguise. Embracing his alter-ego, the fierce Bianca Del Rio, he decides to confront the small-town prejudices head-on, while also aiming to assist Karma with a deeply personal family issue she's been evading since her youth. As the sassy Bianca, Richard becomes an outspoken force to reckon with, putting unruly students and the hypocritical school staff in their rightful places. As he navigates this new double life, he quickly discovers the unintended consequences of his actions while simultaneously transforming into the most effective teacher the school has ever seen. Above all, he seeks to reclaim his dignity and deliver a powerful lesson to the people of Milford - one of acceptance, resilience, and the audacity of being true to oneself.
