Plot

In the bustling heart of New Rochelle, New York, the enchanting marital dance of Grif and Jenny Henderson unfolds. Grif, a seasoned magazine photographer, and Jenny, his vibrant wife, find their harmonious routine disrupted by their fifteen-year-old son, Davey. As a budding flower child on the cusp of manhood, Davey yearns to chase love and adventure across the European landscape with his girlfriend, Linda "Bootsie" Wax, the vivacious daughter of Grif's boss, Haskell Wax. Caught in a parental dilemma, Grif and Jenny grapple with their contrasting views on Davey's maturity. While Grif sees this European escapade as a rite of passage for his son, Jenny clings to the image of Davey as her baby. Surrendering to a compromise masterminded by Jenny and Bootsie's mother, Vera Wax, Grif is thrust into a dual role of chaperone and photographer on the girls' only student tour, with Davey as his eager assistant. Jenny, now a part of the adventure, rents a quaint house on the picturesque French Riviera to serve as a summer home for the family. The tour commences with a trans-Atlantic cruise from New York, leading to a month-long separation for the family in Paris. As Grif and Davey embark on their own paths, the question of free love among the flower children will be put to the test. The month apart also becomes a test for Grif and Jenny's marriage as they navigate the seductive maze of European allure. Grif, while deeply desiring his wife, fights against the world's perception of her as a mere middle-aged housewife. Jenny, on the other hand, finds herself in the crosshairs of the charming Parisian lawyer Phillipe Maspere, a man as infamous for his womanizing ways as he is celebrated for his legal prowess. "How Sweet It Is!" is a delightful comedy starring James Garner and Debbie Reynolds, a captivating tale that explores the strength of familial bonds and the challenges of fidelity amidst temptation. Directed by Jerry Paris and written by Muriel Resnik, Garry Marshall, and Jerry Belson, this film is a love letter to the turbulent era of the 60s, complete with a mesmerizing soundtrack composed by Patrick Williams and a title track penned by Jimmy Webb.
