In the shadowy world of petty cons and quick scams, Eddie Hall and his sidekick Slim swindle their way through life, always one step ahead of the law. Their game of cat and mouse takes a sudden detour when Eddie, cornered by the police, seeks refuge in the apartment of the street-savvy Ruby Adams. Ruby, no stranger to duping the unsuspecting, has her own tale, entangled with Al, an honest, love-struck man from Cincinnati. An unexpected spark ignites between Ruby and Eddie, their mutual attraction fueled by the thrill of their deceptions. However, their darkly romantic dance is abruptly interrupted when Eddie unintentionally lands a fatal blow to a drunkard laying unwanted hands on Ruby.
