In the vibrant world of vaudeville, "Her Painted Hero" unfurls a comedic tapestry of love, jealousy, and theatrical dreams. Charles Murray, a diligent property man, and Slim Summerville, a zealous billposter, find themselves entangled in a spirited love triangle with Polly Moran, a stage-obsessed maiden who cherishes a deep adoration for matinee idol Hale Hamilton.
The narrative takes an unexpected turn when Polly's father, Harry Booker, inherits his brother's estate, catapulting their lives from humble existence to opulent mansion dwellers. Amidst this newly acquired grandeur, a wedding is set between Polly and Murray. However, the presence of Hamilton as a guest unravels a whirlpool of emotions, culminating in a heated argument involving Murray, Summerville, and Booker.
The ensuing chaos transforms the serene Booker estate into a battlefield, echoing with the clamour of makeshift weapons. The aftermath of this comic war sees Polly renouncing her engagement, while extending a tantalizing offer to Hamilton – her financial backing for his new production in exchange for the leading lady's role.
Polly's theater debut, however, spirals into a series of hilariously absurd situations, as her inexperience wreaks havoc on stage. A fire backstage and a wild hose-wielding Murray add more fuel to the comedic chaos. An unexpected accident catapults Polly to the top of the proscenium arch, only for her to plummet amidst the disarray. A shocking explosion following a bomb toss sends Hamilton, Murray, and Slim flying out of sight, prompting Hamilton's disgusted departure.
In this delightful blend of Keystone Cops' slapstick humor and vaudevillian satire, the spotlight is on an untalented troupe led by Hamilton.
