Plot

In the fervor of the 1970s, Edward Fudge, a young and esteemed preacher from Alabama, encounters an intriguing proposition from an eccentric Australian, who tasks him with a mission to prove the existence of a perpetually ablaze Hell. Fudge, raised under the watchful eye of a beloved, fundamentalist church leader, firmly subscribes to the conservative theology that those unsaved will eternally languish in Hell's torment. Despite this, he agrees to cast away his beliefs and devote a year of his life to systematically study the topic for a modest sum of $3000. As Fudge delves deep into his research, the world around him begins to fracture. His ideas ignite controversy among his denominational leaders as he suggests the possibility of salvation for members of other denominations. He faces dismissal from his cherished church for daring to invite a black man to lead a prayer from the pulpit. Even his long-time employer, a publishing company, expels him for refusing to renounce his progressive stances. His relentless pursuit of truth starts to cast shadows on his family life. Most alarmingly, the bedrock of his faith is shaken as his investigation challenges his long-held beliefs about the nature of God. Yet Fudge emerges from the turmoil, steadfast and resolute, a defender of faith and Scripture and a beacon of God's love. Today, Edward Fudge's name resonates in the world of theology as a respected author, lecturer, and theologian. His book, "The Fire That Consumes", birthed from his intense research, is hailed as a seminal work on the subject of Hell and eternal torment. It serves as a testament to a man who bore the courage to seek out the truth, and to bear the weight of his discoveries.
