Plot

In the murky swamplands outside of New Orleans, Dave Robicheaux, a former homicide detective turned bait-shop owner, has crafted a serene existence with his wife, Annie. Renouncing his past life filled with crime and alcohol, Dave now finds solace amidst the bayous, far removed from the city's sins. However, this tranquility shatters when a drug smuggler's airplane crashes into their peaceful bayou, leaving a trail of death and devastation in its wake. Acting on instinct, Dave rescues the sole survivor, a young El Salvadoran girl, from the wreckage. Touched by her innocence, Dave and Annie welcome her into their home, with Annie naming her Alafair, a tribute to Dave's mother. But the plane crash doesn't just disrupt their lives; it also brings DEA agent Minos Dautrieve to their doorstep, stirring up old memories and forgotten foes. Haunted by his past, Dave is thrown back into the world he left behind when he discovers Bubba Rocque, his childhood friend turned drug kingpin, is intricately linked to the crash. As he delves deeper into the investigation, he is drawn into a tangled web of deceit and danger, where every familiar face hides a secret, including Bubba's seductive wife, Claudette, and Dave's old flame, a blonde stripper named Robin Gaddis. Despite warnings to back off, Dave's relentless pursuit of truth only intensifies, pushing him further into the murky underbelly of the city. When the darkness he's been chasing strikes at the heart of his home, leaving Annie dead, Dave's quest for justice becomes personal. Convinced of Bubba and Claudette's involvement, Dave embarks on a perilous journey, vowing to avenge Annie and protect Alafair. In a world where the line between friends and enemies blurs, Dave finds his past and present colliding, and must confront the demons he thought he'd left behind.
