Heart of the West (1936)

In the riveting sixth installment of the Hopalong Cassidy series, inspired by Clarence E. Mulford's "Mesquite Jenkins, Tumbleweed," we find the fearless Hopalong Cassidy and his youthful sidekick, Johnny Nelson, embarking on a journey away from their Bar 20 homestead. Responding to a call for help from the Tumbling-L Ranch of Big John Trumbull near Yucca, their adventure begins when they rescue Windy, an old wrangler under siege from unseen assailants. This chance encounter unveils that Windy is an employee of the Three-J Ranch, whose boundaries kiss those of Trumbull's land. Arriving at the Tumbling-L Ranch, Cassidy and Nelson find their potential employer not quite to their liking. They reject Trumbull's job offer, instead opting to throw their lots in with the Three-J Ranch. Here, they find intrigue and duty under the easterner Jim Jordan and his sister, Sally. Jordan's ambitious plan to fence his sprawling grazing land incites Trumbull's wrath. Unbeknownst to Jordan and his crew, Trumbull and his henchmen have been covertly directing rustled cattle through a pass on Jordan's property. With their loyalty firmly with the Three-J Ranch, Cassidy and Nelson find themselves in the thick of a western feud. They stand their ground against Trumbull's intimidation tactics, from brutal gun warfare to a life-threatening stampede of rustled cattle aimed at the newly erected fence. Cassidy's quick thinking and a well-placed dynamite blast save the day, releasing a wave of water that sends the stampeding cattle back towards their rustlers. With the pandemonium at the Three-J Ranch neutralized, our heroes, their duty fulfilled, bid goodbye to their newfound allies and set their sights back on Bar 20. The dust of the plains settles, but the echoes of their heroic deeds remain, a testament to their gallantry in the Heart of the West.
