It's the approach to the Christmas season, and Emily Melrose has embraced all that it means to live on Evergreen Lane, which includes loving the Christmas craziness of the neighborhood despite still not being as engrossed in the traditions as her eccentric neighbors, but most of all having fallen in love with next door neighbor, her childhood friend Jared Farnsworth. On top of his duties as the President of the Homeowners Association (HOA) and ensuring that everyone abides by the HOA's official Christmas policies, Jared has other concerns on his mind as he is planning a special proposal of marriage to Emily on Christmas Eve. But things get sidetracked for everyone in the neighborhood when reality television stars Joe, Jane and their adolescent son Jimmy - known collectively as the Jolly Johnsons - move into the house next door to Emily, their claim to fame being winning the Ho Ho Ho competition. Even the most Christmas competitive of the neighbors, including Jared, Pamela and Ned, try to impress the Johnsons while not always agreeing with the Johnsons' suggestions to make Christmas on Evergreen Lane bigger and thus in their own minds better. But when everything for the Johnsons seems to be to win at any and all cost, the HOA Christmas policies be damned, the lines are drawn for how Christmas will operate this year on Evergreen Lane, which may in turn negatively affect Jared's special plans to propose.
