Plot

In the tumultuous world of American football, Hank Cooper finds himself on the brink of losing his beloved yet underperforming team, the California Atoms, to Charles Gwynn, the unscrupulous lender who kept the team afloat during tough times. In a desperate bid to save his team, Cooper strikes a high-stakes deal with Gwynn. The challenge? To win half of the season's games, a seemingly impossible feat given the Atoms' less than stellar track record. However, destiny has a wildcard in store for Cooper. From the distant lands of Yugoslavia, comes Gus, a mule with a knack for kicking a ball over a hundred yards. Initially introduced as a novelty act, Gus quickly proves to be the game-changer the Atoms desperately need. Against all odds, with every thunderous kick, the mule propels the team from the bottom of the league chart, stirring a wave of victories that leaves the competition flabbergasted. Feeling the heat, Gwynn resorts to underhanded tactics. He enlists the help of Wilson, who in turn hires two ex-cons, Spinner and Crankcase, to sabotage Gus's game and halt the Atoms' unexpected ascent. Thus, the battle lines are drawn not only on the field, but also off it. As the California Atoms rise from the ashes, the question remains - can a mule named Gus kick their fortunes around and lead them to an unimaginable victory? Or will Gwynn's sinister plot succeed in crushing their newfound hope? The game is on, and every kick counts in this uproarious underdog tale that combines the thrill of football with the heartwarming bond between a boy and his mule.
