In the shadow of the Civil War, a tragic misfire claims the life of a close friend, leaving a man encased in a shell of guilt. As he returns to the dusty town of Abilene, he finds his former flame on the verge of wedding the brother of the man he unintentionally killed. In an attempt to reconcile with his haunting past, he renounces his claim on her heart and accepts the weighty mantle of Sheriff, a position offered by the very man who unknowingly stands in the path of the bullet that took his brother's life.
