Plot

In the quaint lanes of Blacktree Road, a peculiar experiment involving political refugees unfolds. They are granted gardening allotments, a strategic maneuver to help them acclimate to the local community. The reaction is a cocktail of intrigue and unease among the existing allotment owners, tightly controlled by the iron-fisted committee chairman and ex-cop, Big John - a man who doesn't shy away from intimidating his son, playfully referred to as Little John. Unexpectedly, the tranquil allotments become a battlefield when Carla, a fiercely ambitious mobile phone company employee, and Mike, her naive assistant, make their appearance. They dangle a tantalizing five grand offer for one of the plots, intending to erect a phone mast. It becomes clear that the newcomers are the likely sacrificial lambs. Big John, however, is reluctant to lose Iranian Ali, a doctor whose free advice is invaluable to the community. When Ali and his family face deportation as failed asylum seekers, attention shifts to Kung Sang, a traumatized Asian immigrant who communicates through his young children. Big John's domineering ways, especially his treatment of Little John over his affection for African beauty Miriam, and his strict enforcement of the rules, begin to rankle the other gardeners. Among them is the aging free spirit Kenny, who chafes against Big John's one-man show in negotiating with Carla, and Kung Sang's gradual acceptance by the group, symbolized by a soup made from his freshly harvested squashes. As the plot thickens, Big John's decision to introduce a secret ballot backfires spectacularly. A new era of international harmony dawns on Blacktree Road, complete with a fresh chairman, marking the beginning of a refreshing chapter for the gardening community.
