Plot

In the twilight of their lives, Isidro, Arturo, and Desiderio find themselves navigating their existence in a world that has seemingly outgrown them. Isidro, a 60-year-old unemployed salesman, spends his days caring for his grandchildren, while yearning for the purpose that a new job would bring. Arturo, a once-celebrated writer of romantic novels, grapples with a creative drought and the sudden appearance of Violeta, who claims to be his daughter, and her baby, Marcela. Desiderio, a 70-year-old widower, finds himself sharing his home with his disillusioned son Carlos and adoring daughter-in-law Lola after they lose their house. Struggling to understand the language and norms of the modern world, Isidro conceives an idea that promises to reinvigorate their lives: starting their own kindergarten. To realize this dream, they enlist the help of Bruno, a hapless love-struck training coach, in exchange for Arturo's romantic advice. However, their journey to self-reinvention is not without hurdles. Isidro's relentless pursuit of employment strains his relationship with his wife, Amalia. Arturo wrestles with the revelation that Violeta is not his biological daughter, a secret he's kept since he first met her mother. Desiderio finds love in the unexpected form of Teresa, but struggles to reveal that Marcela, who she believes is his granddaughter, is not related to him. Meanwhile, Lola grows frustrated with Carlos's resentment towards his father and his own complacency. As they grapple with obtaining financing for their kindergarten and their personal dilemmas, Isidro, Arturo, and Desiderio are not just fighting to prove their worth, but also reassessing their life priorities and desires. "Grandfathers" (2019) is a poignant tale of friendship, self-discovery, and the timeless struggle to find one's place in an ever-evolving world.
