Grand Illusion (1937)

In the throes of World War I, a tale of unexpected camaraderie and survival unfolds in the shadowed trenches and guarded POW camps of Germany. French Captain de Boeldieu, an aristocrat by birth, and Lieutenant Maréchal, a humble mechanic before the war, are shot down during a reconnaissance mission by the formidable Captain von Rauffenstein. Despite their differing backgrounds, the trio's shared captivity breeds a bond. Maréchal and Rosenthal, fuelled by the fiery spirit of freedom, plot another daring escape. De Boeldieu, however, with his sense of duty and his unique connection with von Rauffenstein, finds himself in the throes of a moral dilemma.
