Plot

In the rustic tranquility of Quebec Laurentians, a small town cradles an isolated residence - a symbol of survival for Michelle, her intellectually impaired brother Guy, and her adolescent daughter Manon. Their humble existence is held together by a small firewood enterprise and a mosaic of odd jobs. A sense of dissatisfaction cloaks Michelle as she battles the demands of poverty and the emotional needs of those around her. Guy, a childlike soul, is lost in a world of his own, hopelessly infatuated with their affluent client, Madame Viau-Vachon. Maurice, the town's police chief, basks in the warmth of Michelle's love, while Gaetan, a family friend and mechanic, yearns for a taste of the same. Yet, amidst these complexities, it's Manon who proves to be the most challenging. Manon, precocious beyond her years and disinterested in school, finds herself embroiled in a whirlpool of jealousy towards her mother's suitors, resentment at the household chores, and the responsibility of caring for Guy. When an unforeseen incident threatens to disrupt the fragile emotional equilibrium between Manon and her mother, she becomes fixated on eliminating all obstacles that hinder her monopolizing Michelle's love, regardless of the consequences.
