Deep in the heart of Chicago's underground dance scene, Carmen, a brilliant student with a defiant spirit, dances her worries away. Her dreams reach beyond the gritty embrace of the city, yet self-doubt chains her to the ground. As a child of immigrant Mexican parents, striving in working-class society, her path is set towards education and stability. Juggling junior college and a grocery store job, Carmen's life is a symphony of hustle and grind. One day, her professor stumbles upon her dancing in the neighborhood, a glimpse into Carmen's hidden world. A challenge is issued - audition for a prestigious dance school in sun-drenched California. However, life isn't that simple. Carmen's home life spirals into chaos, driving her into the refuge of her best friend Gina's home. But the sanctuary is marred by the revelation of Gina's abusive relationship. Simultaneously, her boyfriend Jared demands commitment, asking her to share a home with him.
