Git Along Little Dogies (1937)

In the heart of a small western town, nestled amidst cattle and oil wells, Gene Autry (Gene Autry) stands as a steadfast defender of his cattle's drinking water, vehemently opposing the nearby oil well drilling. His greatest adversary is the spirited Doris Maxwell (Judith Allen), daughter of the town's banker, who is passionately campaigning for the oil drilling project through her radio station. Her father, Mr. Maxwell (William Farnum), has staked the bank's funds in the oil company, making the stakes even higher. A twist of fate brings Gene and Doris together when Gene thwarts a robbery aimed at the oil company payroll, masterminded by the cunning George Wilkins (Weldon Heyburn), the man overseeing production at the well. Wilkins has his eyes on securing the lease for himself and will stop at nothing to ensure the company's failure. Upon the unfortunate demise of Mr. Maxwell, Gene, in a bid to protect the town from the truth of the bank's misappropriation, makes it appear as a bank robbery gone wrong. Learning about the potential benefits of a railroad branch line into the valley if oil is found, Gene reconsiders his opposition to the oil drilling project. He manages to persuade the ranchers about the value of a railhead, and successfully sells numerous shares of stock. However, Gene's triumph is short-lived, as Wilkins spreads rumors of a dry well, painting Gene as a conman who has deceived the trusting ranchers. Forced to flee from a misguided posse, Gene makes a daring move to prove his innocence and reveal the truth. He leads the posse to the drilling site, where Wilkins and his henchmen have manipulated the workers to abandon drilling. As Gene stands on the brink of proving the existence of oil by using dynamite, the posse arrives, still under the impression that Gene is the perpetrator who assaulted Maxwell and robbed the bank. Amidst this chaos, Doris uncovers the truth, putting Wilkins on the spot. In a final thrilling showdown, Wilkins attempts a risky escape, setting the stage for a gripping climax that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats until the very end.
