Plot

In the bustling heart of New York City, Bill Fuller, a steadfast urbanite, shares a rented apartment with his wife Connie, her love-struck teenage sister Madge, their loyal housekeeper Hester, and Rommy - their spirited terrier. After being displaced for the third time in a year, they face a crossroads of urban survival and unforeseen adventure. Unbeknownst to Bill, Connie decides to trade their city life for a taste of rural tranquility. She purchases a dilapidated colonial farmhouse in scenic northeastern Pennsylvania, drawn by unverified legends that George Washington once graced its halls with his presence. Pulling Bill from the city's concrete embrace, Connie throws them into a whirlwind of countryside challenges. Their dreams of owning a piece of history soon crumble when they discover the tales of Washington's stay are mere folklore, diminishing the property's historical value. The farmhouse, far from the idyllic haven Connie envisioned, reveals itself as a relentless devourer of time, effort, and money. Mr. Kimber, the estate's caretaker, is a fountain of unending, costly renovations that threaten to drain their finances beyond the burden of the mortgage. Their trials extend beyond the property's relentless demands. Their neighbors emerge as unexpected foes - Mr. Prescott relishes their struggles, and Bill grows suspicious of Jeff Douglas's intentions towards Connie. Family matters further complicate their rural escapade. Madge's latest romantic obsession grows stronger, they become the reluctant guardians of Connie's mischievous nephew Raymond, and a surprise visit from Connie's affluent yet stingy Uncle Stanley adds to their growing list of tribulations. In this comedic symphony of errors, "George Washington Slept Here" explores whether our urbanite-turned-farmer family can withstand their rural misadventures and emerge victorious. Will they conquer the looming challenges, or will their dreams of countryside tranquility dissolve into the Pennsylvania air?
