Plot

In the heart of Tokyo, amidst the dilapidated charm of Fukufuku Flats, resides Tatsuo Fukuda, affectionately known as "Fuku-chan" (Miyuki Oshima). A 32-year-old rustic soul, Fuku-chan swapped the tranquility of rural Tochigi Prefecture for the city's hustle after junior high school, finding solace in the simple job of a painter. His days are spent in the artistry of transforming buildings with color, his nights, a peace-keeper navigating the eccentricities of his fellow Flat residents, and his off-days, a kite enthusiast finding joy by the riverside. Despite being a beacon of warmth and equality in his community, Fuku-chan's romantic endeavors are a tragic comedy of errors, often reducing his dates to disasters, much to the amusement of his workmate, Shimacchi (Yoshiyoshi Arakawa). This loveable misfit's life takes an unexpected turn when a face from his past, Chiho, resurfaces at Fukufuku Flats after a lapse of two decades. Chiho, his first love from junior high school, arrives with a mission to ask for forgiveness for an incident that left Fuku-chan scarred and inadvertently fostered his fear of women. As she embarks on her journey of becoming a photographer, Fuku-chan finds himself reluctantly entwined in her life, and as old wounds reopen, so does his heart. Will he conquer his fears and let love in again? The story of Fuku-chan of Fukufuku Flats is a poignant exploration of love, redemption, and the courage to face one's past.
