Plot

In the vibrant tapestry of 13th century Italy, we meet Francis Bernardone (Bradford Dillman), a young man destined for a promising army career. Born into the opulent household of a prosperous Assisi cloth merchant, Francis is poised to inherit a world of wealth. However, his heart beats to a different drum. Enthralled by a profound spiritual calling, he renounces his worldly possessions and the allure of a military life. Instead, he embarks on a path of humble dedication to God, establishing his own religious order under the sanctified approval of the Pope. His radical vows of poverty echo through the grand halls of affluence, inspiring many and garnering him a revered reputation. Among those captivated by his divine devotion is Clare (Dolores Hart), an aristocratic maiden of exquisite beauty and grace. So moved is she by St. Francis's dedication, Clare renounces her privileged life, leaving her family behind to embrace the humble garb of a nun. As we journey through the hallowed life of St. Francis, the film brings to light his extraordinary miracles, such as the mystical appearance of the stigmata on his hands and feet. From his early years to his final moments on October 3, 1226, "Francis of Assisi" paints an ethereal portrait of a man who chose God over gold, and service over status. This film is a poignant exploration of how one man's spiritual journey can ignite the flame of faith in the hearts of many.
