Plot

Francesco (1989) is a compelling tale of St. Francis of Assisi's (1181-1226) transformative journey from a privileged, virile young man, to a prisoner of war, then a benevolent beggar who relinquishes his inheritance, choosing a life of poverty to serve the needy. This mesmerizing narrative unfolds as his devout followers gather posthumously, recounting tales of his life to Leone, ensuring that his legacy lives on. His radical devotion to the Gospel's teachings of poverty draws many followers, inspiring them to join the order he establishes. However, his high expectations incite rebellion among his disciples. Amidst this turmoil, facing persecution from the family of Chiara Offreduccio (1194-1253) – the future St. Clare – and grappling with illness, he seeks solace and endorsement from the Pope. In the throes of despair, he pens a Rule to present to the Pope, only to receive a divine message from the Lord. This vibrant epic concludes with St. Francis' peaceful death, his face adorned with a serene smile, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire millions today.
