Plot

In the heart of South America's political turbulence in the 1970s, Forgotten (2014) unfolds. Retired General José Mendieta, portrayed by Damián Alcázar, finds himself grappling with the specters of his past after suffering a heart attack. His life, once defined by the uniform he wore, is now haunted by his involvement in Operation Condor, a CIA-backed campaign of political oppression that plunged Latin America into a horrifying era of executions, tortures, and forced disappearances. As Mendieta battles the shadows of his past, he decides to pen a letter to his son Pablo, played by Bernardo Peña. In it, he confesses his role in the abduction, persecution, and execution of countless innocents during his tenure in Chile. Among those who fell prey to his reign of terror were journalist Marco, portrayed by Carlotto Cotta, his pregnant wife Luciá, played by Carla Ortiz, their activist comrade Antonio, enacted by Tomás Fonzi, and the revolutionary Andrea, a character brought to life by Ana Calentano. Their lives, intertwined with Mendieta's, unravel a tale of unimaginable suffering under Mendieta and his ally Sanera, played by Rafael Ferro. This intricate web of deceit, secrets, and stolen lives that spans generations is the central thread of Forgotten. Bolivia's Foreign Language Film submission for the 87th Academy Awards®, this cinematic masterpiece employs a talented ensemble cast from five countries. Filmed in the diverse landscapes of Bolivia, Chile, and New York, it is the first film to shed light on the horrors committed under Operation Condor—horrors that claimed 50,000 lives, resulted in 30,000 people "disappeared", and led to the imprisonment of 400,000 individuals across Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Forgotten delves into the dark annals of history, offering a haunting exploration of an aging Bolivian General's search for redemption. It's a gripping tale that reminds us of the human cost of political repression and the enduring power of truth.
