Plot

In the shadowy aftermath of the massacre on April 9, 1948, where over a hundred lives were extinguished in the Palestinian village of Deir Yassin by a Jewish militia, stands a mental institution, constructed atop the ruins. Its inaugural patients were none other than survivors of the Holocaust, who, legend whispers, have been engaging in spectral dialogues with the ghostly remnants of the village. At the heart of this spectral tale is David Adler, a 20-year-old American-Israeli, who relocates to Israel only to find himself confined within the very institution that dwells on the ruins of Deir Yassin. A narrative tapestry woven of past and future unveils the circumstances leading to his institutionalization. A spectral child of ten holds the key to the enigma, and her secrets hold the potential to grant David liberation from a fate that seems destined to repeat itself. A psychiatrist at the institute, Doctor Itzhik Shemesh, administers a cutting-edge chemo-technological drug to David, hoping to construct a path over the trauma-riddled landscape of his psyche. Despite ethical misgivings, Shemesh's use of the drug reflects a deep-seated denial of his own. David's father, Henry Adler, a Holocaust survivor turned celebrated American musician, grants permission for the use of the drug, his faith in rational action and his desire for normality blinding him to the weight of the past that crushes his son. As the truth unfurls, Henry is confronted with a horror that surpasses all others. David's only guide in the hospital is a blind fellow patient named Muselmann, who, like the mythical Tiresias, encourages him to heed the spectral whispers that haunt him. A survivor himself, Muselmann has chosen to dwell in the liminal space between life and death, serving as a liaison between David and the spectral echoes of the past. As David's story unfolds, it mirrors the eternal recurrence of trauma and a fate seemingly ensnared in an unalterable pattern.
