Plot

In the bustling city of San Francisco, Lulu McAfee, a woman blessed with an indomitable spirit but cursed with mental illness, resides in a haven for similarly afflicted adults. As the new millennium approaches in June 1999, she impulsively dashes to Los Angeles, seeking out Ben Clifton, a former lover now trapped in the quagmire of television writing and an unsatisfying marriage to a psychiatrist, Claire. Before Ben can alert Lulu's doctor, she drops a bombshell: they share a son, conceived after their romance ended and her mental health deteriorated. With a mixture of surprise and trepidation, Ben informs Claire of his mission to accompany Lulu to Wisconsin, where their son resides, intending to surprise him on his sixteenth birthday - a meeting that Lulu insists is premeditated. As they journey across the country, Lulu attempts to rekindle their extinguished passion and reignite the spark of idealism in Ben. Concurrently, Claire boards a flight to Madison, a silent observer to the imminent downfall of her marriage. But does the son they're traveling to meet truly exist? And what emotional landmines lurk in the shadows of their expedition? This journey offers more than meets the eye, with tantalizing secrets set to be unveiled.
