Flirting with Disaster (1996)

In the throes of an identity crisis, Mel Coplin embarks on a nationwide odyssey, with his wife Nancy and their infant son in tow, in a quest to discover his biological lineage. The couple is at odds over naming their baby, a decision hinging on Mel's self-realization, which he believes will only come to light once he uncovers his roots. To aid in this pursuit, they enlist the help of Tina Kalb, a vivacious student psychologist doubling as an adoption agent, who is eager to document Mel's emotional reunion with his birth mother for her dissertation. The trio leaves Mel's adoptive parents feeling deserted, their home a void filled only with the remnants of their ungrateful son's existence. They journey across the United States, beginning in sunny California, where an agency error leads them to a woman who, unfortunately, isn't Mel's birth mother. Undeterred, they navigate a maze of clerical mishaps, mistaken identities, and the unexpected reemergence of Nancy's high school friend and his vibrant gay lover. Throughout this tangled journey, Mel grapples with a wandering eye, while sexual tension simmers beneath the surface, threatening to disrupt the delicate dynamic within the group. Their winding path eventually leads them to remote New Mexico, where they finally encounter Mel's true parents, the eccentric Schlictings, unfortunately mispronounced as the 'Shit-kings' by the unwitting Mrs. Coplin. Confronted by this bizarre reality, Mel is left questioning if he was better off encapsulated in the mystery of his origins.
